Palm Springs Film Fest to Honor Reese Witherspoon

The Palm Springs Film Festival will honor Reese Witherspoon with its Chairman’s Award at its awards gala on Jan. 3, 2015.

Witherspoon receives the award for her performance as Cheryl Strayed in “Wild,” based on Strayed’s best-selling memoir of the same name. The role is generating significant Oscar buzz for Witherspoon as well.

“Reese Witherspoon delivers one of her finest performances in ‘Wild,’” said festival chairman Harold Matzner. “Witherspoon brilliantly brings to life the true story of Cheryl Strayed, adding yet another iconic performance to her impressive 20-year span of characters including June Carter, Tracy Flick and Elle Woods. The Palm Springs International Film Festival is proud to present Reese Witherspoon with the Chairman’s Award.”

The actress joins previously announced honorees at the fest including Richard Linklater, Julianne Moore, Eddie Redmayne, Rosamund Pike and J.K. Simmons. Previous recipients of the festival’s Chairman’s Award include Ben Affleck, George Clooney, Richard Gere, Tom Hanks, Dustin Hoffman and Nicole Kidman.

The announcement of the award comes at the end of a busy year for Witherspoon, who in addition to “Wild” will appear in Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Inherent Vice” and served as a producer on David Fincher’s “Gone Girl.”
